Temporary Works

Various Temporary Works, UK

Cadent Gas Ltd, the UK’s largest gas distribution network, manages approximately 80,000 miles of pipeline infrastructure serving more than 11 million customers across the country.

As part of our long-standing partnership with Cadent Gas Ltd, LSY Engineering Consultants Ltd provides specialist temporary works engineering services to support maintenance, repair, refurbishment, and emergency response projects throughout the UK.

Our remit regularly includes the design, assessment, and independent checking of a wide range of temporary works solutions, including:

  • Batter stability assessments
  • Excavation support arrangements
  • Main access excavations
  • Pincher excavations
  • Shaft excavations
  • Stepped foundation support systems
  • Temporary anchorage systems
  • Temporary propping and shoring systems
  • Trench excavations

In addition to temporary works design, LSY provides both Category 2 and Category 3 design checks where required, ensuring all schemes are independently verified and compliant with industry standards and best practice.

The projects undertaken for Cadent frequently involve working within complex and unpredictable site environments. Ground conditions can vary significantly between projects, with the exact soil profile, groundwater conditions, utility constraints, and site access arrangements often unknown during the early stages of a scheme. This requires flexible and adaptable engineering solutions capable of being developed and verified in compressed timeframes.

Many commissions are associated with emergency gas infrastructure works where rapid decision-making is essential to maintain public safety and network resilience. In these situations, our engineers are often required to undertake site inspections, provide immediate technical guidance, and support construction teams in real time before formal design documentation is completed.

Furthermore, each project is influenced by unique contractor methodologies, equipment availability, sequencing requirements, and operational constraints. Developing practical temporary works solutions that are both technically robust and buildable is therefore critical to successful project delivery.

LSY adopts a collaborative and pragmatic approach to temporary works engineering, combining detailed analysis with practical construction experience.

Each project begins with a review of the available information, which typically includes:

  • Existing drawings
  • Ground investigation reports
  • Proposed construction drawings
  • Site constraints and programme requirements
  • Utility survey information

At the outset of each commission, we engage directly with both the client and contractor to establish the preferred construction methodology before commencing detailed design. This early engagement allows us to understand the equipment, materials, and temporary works systems that contractors intend to use, enabling our designs to align with site operations and improve overall buildability.

A critical aspect of our process is developing and agreeing the proposed sequence of works at an early stage. By understanding the construction sequence from the outset, we can identify risks, optimise temporary support arrangements, and ensure designs integrate seamlessly with the contractor’s programme.

Where possible, LSY seeks to standardise temporary works solutions through the use of commonly available proprietary props, trench support systems, and construction materials. This approach delivers several benefits, including:

.

  • Enhanced construction efficiency and safety.
  • Faster mobilisation and installation on site.
  • Improved familiarity for site operatives.
  • Increased flexibility during emergency response works
  • Reduced procurement and lead times.

Our extensive experience in temporary works engineering enables us to provide practical solutions across a diverse range of projects, from minor excavations through to complex infrastructure schemes.

To ensure continuity and high-quality project delivery, each commission is overseen by a senior Chartered Structural Engineer who acts as the principal point of contact throughout the project lifecycle. This provides clients and contractors with direct access to experienced engineering support from concept through to completion.

Once designs have been completed, all temporary works calculations, drawings, and supporting documentation undergo rigorous internal review procedures. Every design is independently reviewed and signed off by at least two Chartered Structural Engineers accredited through the Institution of Structural Engineers (MIStructE), ensuring the highest standards of quality, safety, and compliance are maintained.

LSY’s temporary works design framework has enabled Cadent Gas Ltd to deliver critical infrastructure projects safely, efficiently, and within demanding programme constraints. Our responsive approach, combined with practical construction knowledge and robust quality assurance procedures, has provided clients with confidence that temporary works designs can be implemented quickly without compromising safety or engineering standards.

By developing efficient design processes, maintaining direct communication channels, and continually refining our services, we have become a trusted engineering partner for Cadent across a wide range of infrastructure projects. The strength of this relationship has led to numerous repeat commissions involving temporary works design, structural surveys, structural assessments, certification, and permanent works design.
