The importance of Continued Professional Development as a Structural Engineer

In this article we discuss a very important item in relation to structural engineers as their career progresses called Continued Professional Development (CPD).

It is important to keep learning and improving as your career progresses not only by learning through undertaking projects but also undertake additional learning. For example, online webinar courses, reading, study or CPD talks from suppliers.

Example of CPD Types include the following:

  • Any tertiary courses taken either as an individual course or for a formal Post Graduate award.
  • Short courses, workshops, seminars and discussion groups, conferences, technical inspections, and technical meetings, including Engineers Institution meetings, where these are delivered or facilitated by recognized practitioners in the field.
  • Learning activities in the workplace that extend your area of practice competence base. Activities that are normal work activities and which do not extend your knowledge cannot be claimed as learning activities in the workplace. For any learning activity undertaken in the workplace you must be able to demonstrate how it has extended your knowledge
  • Private study which extends your knowledge and skills including books, journals, transactions, manuals etc.
  • The preparation and presentation of material for courses, conferences, seminars, and symposia.
  • Chartered members employed in tertiary teaching and/or academic research

It is important to keep track of the CPD you attend during your career in a documented format.
