LSY has had great success in recruiting young engineers and helping them to kickstart their career and gain valuable experience both during university and as a graduate. We have a diverse team of engineers with all levels of experience who are enthusiastic to work together in progressing to the next step.

Most of our team joined us as students, many from Imperial College London and Brunel University. Our graduate and student engineers grow with the business, working on a wide range of temporary and permanent projects under the expert guidance of engineers with up to six decades’ experience.

The main items we are looking for is:

  • Enthusiasm, willingness to learn and taking your own initiative when possible.
  • Confidence and having good communication skills.
  • Hobbies and interests outside of work

From a soft skills point of view below are some useful items:

  • Microsoft word
  • Basic AutoCAD skills
  • Microsoft Excel

The traits which will help anyone to join LSY:

  • Can-do and positive attitude
  • Able to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Driven and ambitious in their personal and professional goals e.g. goal to get chartered.
  • Reliability and being well organised.

Below are some insights from Shirley Hung and Bharvi Shah from LSY.

Bharvi Shah insight:

I joined LSY in October 2022 as a BIM Engineer. In my previous role I worked in recruitment and have a Chemical Engineering Degree so this was a big change in my career for me. I had the opportunity to jump right into live projects where I got hands on experience and learnt a lot this way. It helped that I had a background in engineering and was already proficient using AutoCAD. Before I started I took a Revit course to learn some of the basics and build up my skills from there.

The LSY team was very supportive throughout, and in just a few months’ time I could really see myself progressing much quicker than I had expected. In addition to the engineering side of things, with LSY you also get the opportunity to be involved in the business side of things which enables you to get a complete picture on how everything works. So far, I’m loving to work in a dynamic environment where learning and development is encouraged. I also find I have a better work-life balance as we have flexible work hours and the option of a 4-day work week.

Shirley Hung insight:

I started my journey with LSY as an intern during my second year of summer. From that point on, I was given opportunities for part-time work and the chance to continue working while I studied. This has allowed me to gain an abundance of experience even before graduation, including conducting site inspections, analysing structural integrity and conditions, designing temporary works, and collaborating with architects, contractors, and other professionals on various projects. These experiences have provided me with a range of skills and knowledge that cannot be acquired solely through university education. The experiences I have gained through working with LSY have greatly supported my career path and my individual professional development, particularly in my efforts to obtain a chartership. In addition to engineering work, I have also been given opportunities to manage the business side of the company, including aspects such as finance, marketing, and event planning, etc. This has enabled me to gain a good understanding of how everything works within the business.

I am looking forward to continuing my work with LSY even after graduation because of the motivating environment that encourages individual growth in all aspects. The culture at LSY is one that supports personal and professional development, and I have been fortunate enough to benefit from this first-hand.
