An Introduction to Loft Conversions

Today, we’re going to take a look at an increasingly popular trend across the London construction market. We’re talking, of course, about loft conversions. So why are loft conversions so popular? The clue here is that we’re talking about London, where space is at a premium and where prices are quite literally through the roof. If you’re looking for some extra space in your home, a loft conversion can be an ideal solution, depending upon the existing roof structure.

You’ll also need to consider:

  • Planning permission
  • Building regulations
  • Costs

Remember that not all roofs are suitable for loft conversions, so if you’re wondering whether it’ll be possible or not, you shoulder consider the following factors:

  • Height
  • Roof pitch
  • Roof structure

The next step is to determine who’s going to carry out your loft conversion. The good news is that there’s plenty of choice here including:

  • Architects
  • Structural engineers
  • Builders

It’s absolutely critical to consider all of these items before you get started on a project. If you have to raise the roof or to lower the ceiling in the room below to get the head height in the loft, it’ll quickly become unfeasible for the majority of projects and budgets.

As a general rule, we tend to find that traditional roofs are more suitable for loft conversions. Truss roofs can be more complicated and normally require more steel beams than traditional roofs. There are many different types of loft conversions, but the following are what we deal with the most:

  • Mansard roofs
  • Roof lights
  • Dormer conversions
  • Hip to gable loft conversion designs

We’ll take a closer look at the different types of lofts in future articles, as well as when taking a look at some of our current projects.
